We are staying on-top of breaking news right-now.

Good evening and thank you for joining us, i'm rondrell moore.

Tonight, we're learning more about the decision to start sending some students back to school "in-person" 5-days a week.

We first told you at 5 about the change for some schools in vigo county.

News 10's dominic miranda explains the reason for this development.

[take pkg incue: 8 out of outcue: news 10 duration:1:45] do} 8 out of the 18 elementary schools in the vigo county school corporation will move to a 5 day a week, in-person model.

This will begin on monday, september 28th.

The other 10 elementary schools as well as all middle and high schools will continue the a/b format.

Superintendent of vigo county schools dr. rob haworth says the vigo county health department supports the plan.

He says the data is what drove to this decision.

"when you start to look at our district or even our community, we are starting to perform in basically every metric out there but when you start to look at our students, and our staff, inside each building it was a reduction in the number of those positive cases."

The 8 elementary schools returning to the classroom are: deming, franklin, hoosier prairie, lost creek, riley, sugar grove, terre town, and west vigo elementary.

He explained why they feel comfortable moving forward with just elementary schools at this time.

"when you look at young people and their ability to transmit covid-19.they are not demonstrating that they are spreaders of the disease in great length, great detail.

Our data at the elementary is bearing that out.

That if we have cases they are involving older children or adults."

Dr. haworth says these schools are a good mix of small, medium, and large schools as well as rural and urban.

He says this is the beginning of a gradual shift to getting all students back in school in terre haute.
