Oneonta City School District postpones fall sports until spring

With concerns over being able to safely field teams this fall, Oneonta City School District decides to put off holding competition until likely March.

Fall sports season.

The district made the announcement on its twitter page earlier in the day - school officials say that a variety of factors wentig travel requirements - concerns with social distancing guidelines in terms of physical education classes versus interschool athletics - and of course - the recent outbreak at suny oneonta.

For administrators - that outbreak may have sped up the decision-making process but the outcome likely would have been the same regardless.

While other schools may be moving forward with fall sports - decision-makers say they did what was best for oneonta (specifically( given the current circumstances.

Jerry mackey: we didn't feel comfortable putting kids, parents and coaches and support staff in that position so rather than just kicking the can down the line and let these parents and kids think september 21, september 21, september 21, no we are going to get out in front of it.

We believe in full transparency here and we will take the heat, we will be happy to discuss this with anybody who is upset with us and i get how emotional sports is.

School administrators will re-evaluate the situation in october or november and are committed to holding fall sports in the spring should conditions allow.
