Prior to the October Revolution of 1917, there were three separate self-governing Ukrainian states on what is now Ukraine.

Each of these states had its own armed forces.

The largest of these, the Ukrainian People's Republic, was made up of three distinct regimes.

One of the first national armed forces was the Ukrainian People's Army.

Other armed independence movements existed in the aftermath of both the First and Second World Wars, and these armies each had their own organizational structure and uniforms. These armed forces, as well as the independent Ukrainian homeland for which they fought, were eventually absorbed into neighboring states such as Poland, the Soviet Union, Hungary, Romania, and Czechoslovakia.
