A Ballerina’s Entire Beauty Routine
A Ballerina’s Entire Beauty Routine

American Ballet Theatre dancer Scout Forsythe takes us through her entire daily beauty routine.

As she gets ready for a hectic schedule that includes 64 straight shows, Scout shows us how she prepares to hit the stage that evening.

- I never wear makeup in normallife, and then you get meon stage and I'm like, "Yes, do it all!Like, let's make it so big, fake eyelashes, lipstick!"[upbeat music]I'm gonna show you guys abasic ballerina beauty routine. And we even have a callsheet for the performancethat says what kind ofmakeup we need to do.And 85% of the time itsays basic beauty makeup. This is just an averagestage makeup routine.I'm gonna start with my primer.I've noticed it helps create a barrierand it, less makeup gets into my pores. So also, less creasing, too,'cause we're constantlyexpressing and emoting. So, we're constantly moving our faceand so all the creases and stuff you use,all the makeup starts to build up.I've started using Vertra, which is a sunscreen line.I'm dripping sweat on stage, and it doesn't come off,it doesn't move. It's made to withstand waterand be, like, in the ocean. After foundation, it'shighlighter and contouring time.I always try to exaggerate the featuresso people that are up in thenosebleeds seats can see you.I'm definitely not amakeup artist, so like, don't laugh at me.When your hair's back up in a bun, there's always like, you know, your hairline's uneven, sojust kind of even it out. You've got really harsh lighting on you,and so you're gonna get washedout if you don't go darkand extreme with yourcontouring and highlight.Kind of, whoa! This is a contour palette I use.I usual go with kind ofa lightish brown colorfor the contouring. And then highlight, I gowith Revlon PhotoReady. And I even use the brushthat they give you. It's perfect for what you need to do.Next step is powder the face. And we always go down on the neckbecause there's nothing worsethan seeing a really pretty dancerwith her face a differentcolor than her body. And go up on the ears, too.'Cause when we're dancing, we get hot,and so I notice, too, alot, when you see a dancerand you'll see, like, her face, and then these little, red ears. So, I always go up withthe powder onto my ears.So now, we go into the eyebrows.Always go above the eyebrow,'cause we're always, constantly tryingto make our eyes appearbigger than they actually are.So also, depending on what the dance is,if I'm doing somethingthat I need harsher look,I bring them up higher. If we're going somethingthat's a littler softer,I make sure my eyebrows arejust a little bit more daintyand I just kind of colorin what I've already got.Okay, well there's my eyebrows.Another little tip and trick we do,you want to go underneathwith a little bit of lightnessjust to kind of helpaccentuate the dark you puton your eyebrows. Now, onto my favoritepart, which is the eyes.I go into this. It's Pacific, Stone Cold Fox.And I love Pacifica 'causeit's a cruelty-free,vegan brand. It kinda looks a little funky. And that's the best thing, too,I love about stage makeupis that the lines don't haveto be perfect because you'reso far away from the audience, they can't really see it anyways. And this is, I think it's,L'Oreal Lineur Intense, and it's a liquid eyeliner.I try not to go all the wayinto the corner of my eye'cause that just shortens it.So, I usually stop about likeright where the lashes stop, right before the inside corner of my eye.Now it's time for the wings.I like to listen to like oneof the spiritual podcasts.I listen to Guru Singh.I am who I am, exactly who I am.I don't believe in coincidences.I think everything happens for a reasonand you're exactly where youneed to be in every moment.I like to add a little bit ofcolor when I do my eyeshadow. This is like the color I kind of use.And for fake lashes,I just go with the average stuff you findat the, like, Duane Reade or something.I was on stage once, and someone's costumebrushed up against my face. And I turned to a friend, and I kind of has this smileon my face, and I go, "Aremy lashes falling off?"And they had to go, "Yes, they are.But it's okay, you'll be fine."I was almost crying on stage. It was a disaster. And I always make sure totriple check my glue nowafter that, always add more. This is when I'd have likeDrake playing or somethingto get me all pumped up for the show.I always go with like adark brown for underneath. It gives it more of the appearanceof it just naturally looking big. There we go, that's likeyour average eye right there. So now, on to the blush.Just kind of do like a really light blush, because when we're dancing on stage,we get so hot and sweaty thatI get like a natural flush. That's kind of it for blush. So, lipsticks. We never, ever, ever wearred lipstick on stage.Red lipstick either has ablue or orange undertone. And with the harsh andbrightness of the lights, you see that instead of the red.So, I always go for moreof a natural lip color. So, I use this Revlon Rose Velvet. And I like to blend, too.Like, I like to get multiple colors. There we go,and my makeup is done.[light music]
