LawCall: Changes at the Courthouse due to COVID-19

Attorney Will League discusses some recent Changes at the Courthouse due to COVID-19.

Call in questions, the number is 256-536-0077.

We want to walk you through some changes happening at the madison county court house, thank you, covid, changes again.

Will league: the residing judge has met with health experts and doing whatever they can, to keep the lawyers, the witnesses safe, but the folks that report for jury duty.

So in 2020 they suspended jury trials for the rest of this year.

Even district traffic and misdemeanors, small claims, civil dockets.

Those are suspended.

Not only to keep the judges, their staff, the witnesses, everyone at the court house safe, but also the jurors that is come in there.

It's hard to have a jury to be socially distanced to present your case, and, you know, you want safety first.

The flip side of that is, you know, there's important issues that need to be decided by jurors, and those only push those further down the docket and create more of a backlog, but, again, they are doing everything they can.

One thing they are keeping is dhr, you know, child protection services, protection from abuse, emergency child custody hearings, those will still be held.

And those are things that can be heard by just the judge and not a jury.

And so they're keeping some services open for the benefit of the community but trying to protect everyone.

And it's a shame, you know, we are at i think almost time for a record from hospitalizations here in this county and nationwide, think we just saw on the news, 93% up since november 1st.

So it's a serious thing.

Hopefully let's keep everyone
