Fauci: Data 'good enough' on aerosol spread

The nation's top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said on Thursday he believes “there's good enough data to say that aerosol transmission does occur.” This report produced by Yahaira Jacquez.

Fauci: Data 'good enough' on aerosol spread

After mixed messaging from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on how the coronavirus can spread, Dr. Anthony Fauci in an interview on Thursday said the data was clear: coronavirus can spread through the air and farther than 6 feet.

"I believe and I think there's good enough data that aerosol transmission does occur...Aerosol means the droplets don't drop immediately - they hang around for a period of time.

This becomes very relevant when your indoors and there's not good ventilation." The nation's top infectious disease expert made the comments on a Facebook Live talk with the governor of New Jersey and his comments come after the CDC this week reversed course on its own guidance about how the virus is transmitted.

On Monday, it removed information posted on its website just days earlier that said it was possible the virus could spread through airborne particles, saying the guidance was posted in error.

Appearing before lawmakers on Wednesday, the head of the CDC Dr. Robert Redfield said the agency will release new guidance on aerosol transmission.

Though he did not say when.

Dr. Fauci said however the virus spreads, it "doesn't change anything" when it comes to following the health recommendations, such as wearing masks.

"Rather than get bent out of shape of what's the evidence of 5%, 10%.

Aerosol transmission almost certainly occurs.

Then act like it's occurring and do the same thing you've been doing otherwise."
