How does the Butte county sheriff decide on evacuations?

The Butte County Sheriff says many residents still can not return home after the Bear Fire for safety reasons.

Sheriff Honea also talks about how evacuations are communicated to the public and how evacuation warnings and orders are decided.

In constant communication with cal fire when there is a large fire threatening communities, that way the sheriff office can issue evacuations appropriately.

Cal fire and the sheriff office will decide together where to issue evacuation warnings and orders based on fire growth, rate of spread, population density, road access, weather conditions and several other factors.

But sometimes fires can get so wild the sheriff's office may have to issue large evacuation orders without much notice.

This happened during the bear fire.

"ideally we like to issue a warning and give people as much time as possible but at the inception of a fire there are times when it is moving rapidly and the amount of notice that we have isn't sufficient to give a warning, so we have to just issue an order."

Sheriff honea stresses that the sheriff's office does not issue evacuations blind.

It is always done with consultation with cal fire.

They can not issue them without this important communication line, which is usually constant during emergencies like the bear fire.

Coming up at 5, we'll let you know more about how those evacuations are communicated to residents, especially when they live in remote areas.
