Late this afternoon- huntsville city schools confirmed 9 students and staff members tested positive for coronavirus..

That's in the one week since some students returned to in- person learning.

The district also told us there are 114 people in the district currently in quarantine district wide.

Waay 31's sydney martin is live outside the district's central office tonight.

She learned more about the district's decision to close the academy for academics and arts elementary for the next week.

Dan, najahe- huntsville city schools spokesperson told me this afternoon- the majority of the confirmed cases are at one school - the academy for academics and arts elementary- and it believed it necessary to go back to remote learning for more than a week.

The district's spokesperson said it told students to keep their district issued electronic device in case any remote learning is needed.

That makes it a lot easier for the academy for academics and arts elementary to revert to online only learning this week and most of next.

We know 5 people at triple a elementary school have coronavirus- but the district won't provide a breakdown of how many are staff members- and how many are students.

I also learned 20 people at the school are in quarantine..

And the district's spokesperson explained staffing concerns- are a major reason they returned to remote learning.

"in a particular case like this where you have multiple staff members in quarantine, obviously that does make it hard from a staffing perspective, for substitute teachers.

So that was a big factor in this decision."

The district told me students will return next thursday at triple a elementary school - and in the meantime if parents have any questions about remote learning- they should contact either their child's teacher or the school princpal.
