The holiday farm fire has burned over 173 thousand acres and is 14 percent contained tonight.

And crews continue to make progress around the 260 mile perimeter.

Kezi 9 news reporter connor mccarthy joins us live to explain how crews are taking advantage of the cooler weather to keep this fire from spreading -- connor?

Jillian -- the recent thunderstorm showers made it difficult for crews to have direct access to the fire's edge -- so their main focus today was to use this weather we're having -- to help tighten up fire lines just outside the northeast corner of the fire's edge.

Today was also the first day air support was used.

5 helicopters have been dropping water on the northeast portion of the fire all day.

The main goal was to protect the experimental foret on the edge of the fire line.

Officials at incident command say just because there was rain, doesn't meant those east winds are gone for the rest of the year.

The more we can get done around this entire perimeter and we can mopped up in, when those east winds come later on, the less chance of an ember or some other ignition source coming out of there to again start spreading this fire fields says the public should also remember we are still in fire season and the danger is still high.

He says everyone should still avoid burns, camp fires, and using heavy machinary to clear brush.

That number is 541-682-3977 coming up in less than 20 minutes i'll tell you about the plans for crews tonight.
