Teachers and students returned back to Sudduth Elementary for their first day of classes.

Hear from the principal herself on how the first day went and what Sudduth is doing to tackle the coronavirus.

The starkville oktibbeha school district welcomed students back into its buildings today... wtva's rhea thornton was at sudduth elementary to hear about the new procedures.

Grab a pencil and your backpack because school is back in session for suduth elementary here in starkville... and principal morgan abraham says the excitement is soaring through the hallways.

Vo: excitement filled suduth elementary school as students returned back for their first day of classes.

However, not all students are attending in person classes.

Principal morgan abraham said that nearly 38% of students decided to go virtual.

Morgan abraham - principal of suduth elementary we have about 500 kids doing in- person and almost 300 that are doing virtual.

Vo: whether students decided to go online or be in the classroom, they'll still be assigned a specific teacher.

Suduth elementary staff came up with a plan to assign each teacher to either a virtual or in-person class.

Morgan abraham - principal of suduth elementary we felt like with the teachers, they could focus more on whichever type of learning they were teaching if we didn't have them divide their time.

Vo: for the students who are in the building, temperature checks and sanitization will be part of the every day routine.

Morgan abraham - principal of suduth elementary they have their temperature checked before they come into the building and then again right around lunch time... our teachers are also following some verys trict protocols on cleaning the classroom, cleaning surfaces, sanitizing hands, and that kind of thing.

As live: along with temperature checks and sanitization, students and staff wear masks while indoors... but, principal abraham said that students were able to step outside and get a break from the mask today.
