Up in corvallis...a community group has stepped up since the start of the pandemic... making more than 40,000 masks and 7,000 face shields...and their not done yet.

Kezi 9 news reporter andrew haubner caught up with the corvallis sewing brigade to see the success they've had so far and what comes next.

Elizabeth wyatt: we were accepting masks as fast as we could.

We were getting over 500 masks a day and we were trying to coordinate with the benton county operations center.

Back in the spring...once the word had got out about the corvallis sewing brigade...everyone wanted to jump on board.

Elizabeth wyatt: we did some special work for the fire department, and also some tear away masks for the police department to go with their uniforms and i think that's been really appreciated.

Initially the plan was to ramp down production at the end of july but the persistence of covid has meant no stopping now.

And right now...the group has raised over 11,000 dollars on gofundme to keep things going.

And here on 17th street, there are locations set up for dropping off and picking up materials.

Elizabeth wyatt: the favorite thing in the facebook page is to get pictures of people wearing the masks made by the brigade.

Because people are sitting at home isolating, and so to get and see picutres of a mask someone's made is uplifting and makes us all sew faster.

The facebook group has over 1500 members and masks have been sent to corvallis as far away as maine and california.

But it isn't just about the brigades' work.

Elizabeth wyatt: we've made 48000 masks but we also know there are at least that much made by the brigade by other brigaders and people in the community that we don't know who did it for their community.

And to see that in a time like this, is heartwarming.

The brigade looks to continue making ppe...gowns...face shields and of course...masks as a way of bringing everyone together to beat the pandemic.
