A student at Frontier Elementary School in Brookston tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend.

School corporation announced a student at frontier elementary tested positive for the virus over the weekend.

News 18's balint szalavari spoke with parents who have kids that attend the school.

As he reports, they are happy to see how quickly the school corporation has addressed the case.

The frontier school corporation and superintendent dan sichting (zeek-ting) are working to keep students safe after their first positive case of the coronavirus.

Sichting: "desks are sanitized.

In classrooms at frontier ementary school our teachers are spacing out desks as much as they can.

Three to six feet."

In a statement released monday, the school district says a student at frontier elementary tested positive for covid-19 on saturday.

Classmates have since been learning remotely the last few days.

Sichting says this was done to ensure a safe environment when they return.

Sichting: "the classroom was throughly cleaned.

It sat for 72 hours with no students in it."

But the annoucement comes with worry for parents like alyssa bessler.

Her four year is old scheduled to begin pre-school at frontier elementary.

Bessler: "are they going to be cleaning the classrooms constantly throughout the day or just once a day at night, or in the morning or whenever they do clean it?

Other parents like chris perry aren't as concerned.

He believes it's important children are in school as much as possible, especially at a young age.

Perry: "kids need to get into interacting with each other, developing social skills, developing basically how to treat people correctly instead of over remote learning."

Perry's son is classmates with the student who tested positive for the coronavirus.

He says he's happy overall with how the school has handled the situation.

Perry: "the communication from the school corporation has been awesome.

The school nurse, amanda wheeldon, has been nothing been accommodating."

And bessler is happy the district is being transparent.

Bessler: "they are at least doing something instead of brushing it off."

Reporting in brookston, balint szalavari, news 18.

(zeek-ting) sichting says all families whose kids were in close contact with the identified student have been notified.

If you were not contacted by administrators or the school nurse, your child is not at-risk.
