Protest in Thurston turns violent

New this morning..we're keeping you updated on a protest in springfield turned violent and ended with several people arrested.

Activists were met with a wall of police and counter- protesters.

Kezi 9 news reporter jacob roberts joins us live form jesse maine park in springfield.

Jacob, tell us what happened.

This all started at jessie memorial park in the thurston neighborhood around seven last night as a peaceful protest with 200 people.

But there was word the protest would move to downtown springfield.

Protesters marched peacefully but then things changed when they ran into a police barricade.

This is when things got tense.

Take a look at video shot by our crews last night.

You can see the situation escalated quickly between police and protesters but its unclear who escalted it.

Police and protesters can be seen wrestling at the barricade line.

People reported they were slapped, punched, or hit with pepper spray.

A leader of black unity told me this morning three of their members were arrested, one even taken to the hospital with a mild concussion from injuries related to the arrest.

According to black unity, at least one of the counter protesters was also taken into custody.

We did reach out to springfield police for more information and to confirm that arrests were made.

We have not heard back.
