Multisport student-athletes prepare for potential scheduling conflicts

Some of the largest high schools in our area postponed multiple sports to next year, but that could lead to potential schedule conflicts with multisport athletes.

Of the largest high schools in our area postponed multiple sports to next year... but sports reporter brandon benitez joins us with how scheduling conflicts could effect student- athletes here at home.... the eastern athletic league is pushing team sports to next year... but many student-athletes in our area play more than one sport -- or in the case of this pleasant valley viking -- three... which could mean trouble on the horizon... sports revolves around ian guanzon's life... whether it's tossing dimes on the football field, crushing baseballs on the diamond, or meeting me right after working on his jumper... now -- this viking is at a crossroad... ian guanzon: my baseball coach texted texted me and asked me if i saw the c-i-f.

He said did you hear the c-i-f announcement yet?

I said i haven't gotten to it yet.

I said aren't i going to miss a couple weeks of baseball and he said no you have to choose between the two.

I said, choose between the two?

Then i realized i was going to have to choose between basketball and baseball for this p-v upperclassman - it's a tough decision nat at an even tougher time.

It's a huge year.

If i make all three sports i'm going to be on varsity but i'll also have harder classes.

I love all sports, i mean if i had to, i'd do all three but i know i can't.

Which could be detrimental to guanzon's potential college recruiting... luckily -- there's optimism between players and school district administration... guanzon: it's better to have all sports in one season than trying to force all fall sports to the fall season and then there being an outbreak and making it get even worse... it's going to be kind of weird playing in the second semester but it's going to be just as fun as it would be in the first semester.

People are going to have to wrap for the games, it's going to be cold but it think it's going to be okay.

Cusd director of secondary ed.

John shepherd: there is some planning in place to be sure we can accomodate those kids that want to play just so they don't have to choose the e-a-l is the first of nine leagues in our area to change the schedules for some of its sports... we'll be tracking each league's decision as time progresses... for now, brandon benitez.

Action news now coverage you can count on... the c-i-f northern section -- which governs all high school athletics in our region -- will be meeting again in september to re- evaluate the status butte, tehama, and shasta county are in with the coronavirus pandemic....
