Remote learning in fall raises child care concerns

Many parents will again be put in a position of assisting their children with online learning or seeking out child care.

News.

When schools went fully online last spring-- many working parents had to readjust their entire schedules... and now... it's looking like a lot of parents will be in the same boat for fall.

Kezi 9 news reporter chris lueneburg joins us live..

To show us if childcare providers will be able to fill in the gaps.... if needed.

Chris?

Renee, not every parent has time to take their kids out to the playground on a week day-- or help them with online learning.

Daycare operators say they think parents are waiting for more firm information about what districts are planning this fall... but there may be some demand for daycare for school- aged kids.

Little hoots childcare on friendly street in eugene says they can have a maximum of 10 students per classroom under current state guidance -- slashing their total capacity.

They're expecting new guidelines in mid-august expanding their volume and requiring increased protective equipment.

Though there may end up being demand for school- aged childcare... little hoots says their staff can't replace certified teachers.

After school is one thing, but trying to provide and do their school with them here could be very difficult, and we don't know what that will look like because we don't know what the expectations for those students are going to be."

As is, they say there's already a waiting list this fall for infants and toddlers-- and they are getting calls from new parents every day.

Parents of school-aged children tell me they just aren't sure if they'll need daycare or not yet-- all they can do is wait and see.

And another concern for many parents is their student's social development.

I had one parent tell me today she was considering childcare specificially as a chance for her child to have interaction with other kids this fall.
