The Evansville City Council hosted its first reading Monday on a mandatory mask ordinance in the River City.

City council hosting its first reading monday - on a mandatory masks ordinance in the river city.... council leaders say - they wanted to open the discussion - and hear what some in the community had to say.... 44news reporter megan diventi has more.... this discussion comes after a recent surge in covid-19 cases throughout vanderburgh county.... the ordinance's primary author--- third ward councilman zac heronemus says tonights reading will*not involve a vote....but rather the city clerk reading a brief synopsis of the proposed ordinance... ordinances generally require two readings for passage.... heronemous says this was not a topic he wanted to rush--but rather getting input from city officials--local businesses and the public.... "we understand that there people that are for it...people who are against it, but my intent and the intent of the counselors that helped bring this forward and the intent of the mayor and the intent of the commissioners is to make sure that our businesses stay open, make sure that schools stay on track to help open and stay open throughout the duration of the rest of the year."

This wednesday the mask order from the mayor will go into effect--- tomorrow the commissioners will be considering a resolution.... as for the city council vote--- heronemous says the procedural process will be scheduled for july 27th to discuss and/or vote if the ordinance is still in place at that time.
