The pandemic has caused food insecurity for many people.

One community garden is hoping to fill the need.

Insecurity for thousands of minnesotans and a new burden on local governments.

That's why governor tim walz announced wednesday a 12 million dollar effot to combat hunger in minnesota.

Bu t the help doesn't stop there.

Kimt news three's maleeha kamal shows us how one garden is making a difference right here in olmsted county.xxx look live: i'm at the community garden located at autumn ridge church now today these vegetables were hand picked and will be donated tomorrow and hopefully on someone's plate by tomorrow evening.

About a dozen volunteers picked veggies from this garden... before washing and loading them up in crates.

"* the veggies will be donated to half a dozen food organizations in olmsted county.

Nats: these three boxes are all cucumbers there all washed and ready to go to channel one or community food response.

Ken dose created the garden with one of the pastors.

They had the goal to give back to the community.

When they started 5 years ago, they grew just soy beans... now they produce 20 different crops.

"* thousand minnesotans hae visited food shelves each month since the pandemic began.

Food banks are distributing approximately 2.4 million pounds of food per week, representing a 20?

Jim maher sot: "with the needs that the food banks have they are looking for all kinds of support they can for families."

That's jim maher... he and his wife laura volunteer at the garden three times a week.

For them it's a way to escape reality.

Maher says this garden serve mutliple purposes... bringing fellowship and serving a need in the community.

Jim maher sot: "this is one of the pipelines programs is really crucial for them to survive and and the quality of the produces that they are receiving from this particular garden is admirable this is the best produces they can find at any place."

And while it might just be a hobbie for these folks... they're helping to feed their neighbors in need.
