Decatur's mask ordinance may not go into effect as early as some expected.

The last 2 weeks.

Today we learned decatur's mask ordinance - may not go into effect as early as some expected.

The city council says it has to vote on the measure again tomorrow!

Waay 31's max cohan spoke to the decatur mayor today.

He joins us live to explain how it happened.

I'm in athens - where city officials opened up the conversation about a mask ordinance today.

Just 20 minutes down the road in decatur - the mayor told me that because of a prodecural error, the council has to re-vote on the mask ordinance.

City councilman charles kirby said the council conferred with the city attorney about the ordinance last night - who said it was fine.

They didn't find out about the issue until today, but - mayor tab bowling says it shouldn't impact much.

"and if you have a unanimous vote, you can go ahead and vote on that ordinance right then and so they ended up doing that but it wasn't done in a public setting.

So they'll take care of that tomorrow in a public setting."

The mayor says the council will meet tomorrow at 9:55 and expects the process to take only a few minutes.

Mayor bowling told waay 31 that he has no doubt the ordinance will pass again tomorrow and said that it might even pick up a vote.

Reporting live in athens, max cohan, waay 31 news.

After the vote - the city clerk has 48 hours to present the ordinance to the mayor.

Once he gets it - he has 10 days to sign, veto, make changes or do nothing if he does nothing, it's published in the paper 10 days after he gets the ordinance
