NAACP wants Lowndes County supervisor out of office after remarks made Monday

A crowd gathered on the lawn of the county courthouse Wednesday voicing their belief that Sanders should resign.

County naacp and other columbus residents want to see county supervisor harry sanders removed from office.

This after sanders made what many consider racist statments in a county board meeting monday.

Wayne hereford reports that not only do members want sanders gone but they want the confederate monument and state flag gone from the courthouse property as well.

."

Standup.."earlier today here on the courthouse lawn at the lowndes county courthouse, mem bers of the naacp and others gathered to call for harry sanders , the lowndes county supervisor to step down."

"my message was with the racist comments that harry sanders made and put in the paper about african americans , its time for him to go."

Lavonne harris is the lowndes county naacp president.

She and others are upset with what county supervisor harry sanders was quoted as saying in a newspaper.

Sanders said things like black people have been dependent since slavery and that quote "we haven't had slavery in the united states for a hundred and fifty years, why is it still an issue.?'

Unquote.

Harris says sanders made the statements when she and others met with the county board monday to remove the confederate statue that sits on the courthouse lawn.

.

"he should not be board president of the supervisors .

And we came to talk to him on monday about moving the statue he went off the chain.

And as you can see the statue looks like the kkk."

But the countyn board voted three to two along racial lines to keep the statue in place.

District five supervisor leroy brooks says sanders'statements made in light of the statue were unacceptable.

" i think harry cannot be effective as an elected official with that kind of racist attitude.and he stated in the clarion ledger that's what he thinks.

And that's fine.

Go home and think it."

But one man said he did not want to see the statue gone for religious reasons.

"i just think that the good lord is coming back and it ain't no sense in moving it because , he's going to destroy the whole world when he comes back."

Standdup.."we did make numerous attempts to reach out to harry sanders on the situation.

I was unsuccessful.
