Village and county officials decided against opening Sylvan Beach for the holiday weekend after determining the beach could not meet state and local mandates.
Sylvan beach sand has been open for weeks... but with nice weather in the forecast -- and a holiday weekend ahead -- village and county officials took a closer look at the situation.
And it was determined the beach cannot meet the governor's mandated requirements.
That means the sand will be closed.
The mandates require the ability to control a 50 percent capacity of the beach and swim area, enforcing social distancing and controlling parking.
Because those points can't be met..... --swimming and other beach activities won't be allowed.
--there will be limited parking in the village (and( no public restrooms. --and the playground and picnic areas will be closed.
As for what happens if a beachgoer goes anyway.... the sheriff's office or state police will investigate alleged violations.
I asked about tickets being issued.
The sheriff says hopefully not.
The picnic area at verona beach state park (is( open.
The splash pad, however, will be closed this coming weekend.
As for the sand.... i called -- and park officials just don't know yet.
