NYSPHSAA spring sports cancellation

School spring sports seasons were cancelled.

One of the teams affected is whitesboro warriors baseball - the reigning section 3 class a champions.

I spoke to head coach thomas maggio-lino about this new reality.

Thomas maggiolino: it was like one curveball after another you know and you were hoping and hoping but when it finally hit you know the reality set.

Last season the whitesboro warriors won their second sectional championship in the last three years.

-- this year, they won't have an opportunity to repeat.

Thomas maggiolino: we had an idea it would turn into this but we were just hoping to stay positive as long as we could.

They're just so disappointed and it's frustrating for them you know going into their senior year and things that they look forward to and it's just taken away that fast.

The warriors didn't have a chance to finalize their 2020 roster before the coronavirus outbreak.

After winning a title last year, coach and all 9 returning players were excited for the season ahead.

Thomas maggiolino:we've had a team tax going we've been working out since the first week of december so we are going through and a half months straight of our off-season workouts so really just a text from me yesterday was the first communication that we pad as far as the banality of the season.

The senior class has been stripped of their final high school season but the loss of this year impacts all players.

Thomas maggiolino: i think anytime you have an opportunity to showcase your talent whether you're a freshman sophomore junior or senior do you want to take advantage of those opportunities and to have a season taken from you is definitely loss of opportunity to showcase your skills as an individual and also a team player.

But even though their spring season is cancelled, they can potentially still play summer ball.

Thomas maggiolino: they've been doing a lot of what i called in the work individual work on their own.

We're just hoping and keeping our fingers crossed that they don't lose their summer ball.

While this is a devastating time for the senior class, the warriors are staying hopeful and looking forward to next season.

Thomas maggiolino: it's tough to find a silver lining with us but our team this year would've been pretty young so i'm going to have a lot of returners next year when we had for seniors and again it's frustrating for them but it would've been a younger team so at least will have an opportunity with our returners coming back next year i saw hers in juniors will have a bulk of our team coming back which is a positive.

One of the seniors on this year's roster, ryan cardone will be continuing his baseball career at utica college next year.

Take a look at this.
