Child Abuse Incidents Spiking in Parts of Indiana:

As the coronavirus pandemic continues, some parts of indiana are seeing an increase in child abuse incidents.

However according to epd sargent nick winsett, the department hasn't seen a spike in this area, but that may be because some incidents are going unreported during stay at home orders.

Child abuse is a lot like domestic violence in that a lot of these crimes are unde?reported or not reported at all.

We have a tip line as well and we rely heavily on people like neighbors, friends, that sort of thing and they kind of know what's going on and then they will call us and we will do our investigation based off what information they give us.

Often children report the abuse to someone outside the home?

But with schools and daycares closed?

They may not have a chance.

As far as like sex abuses and things like that, a lot of the children will tell a teacher or an adult outside of the family that they trust.

Now that schools aren't in session, these children aren't accessible to adults outside of the family dynamic and there's no data to support this right now, but my guess is probably those sorts of things are still going on it's just unde?

Reported.

If you suspect someone may be the victim of domestic violence or child abuse?

There are multiple outlets that allow you to check in on potential victims, or to report incidents.

The ywca is a good organization, albion fellows bacon center is also a good one.

Another is lampion center.

And most of these places if its a domestic violence situation and the adult or the child has no place to go, they have no other family members or anything like that, these organizations, and it depends on whether they are full or not, or at their capacity, they will allow them to shelter there.
