NYSPHSAA cancels 2020 spring state championship events, Section III remains hopeful to salvage year

High School spring sports state championships have been cancelled in New York State for the 2020 season amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Section III remains on pause, but hopeful it can hold some form of competition.

High school association has announced the cancellatioof.

Impacted sports are boys tennis - boys and girls track and field - boys and girls lacrosse - baseball - softball and golf.

The state has left the possibility for regular season and sectional contests open with individual sections deciding their own fate in those regards.

So far two sections on long island have already made the decision to cancel while section two in the capital district has cancelled sectional events - but regular season play remains on the table there.

With some local reaction - section iii executive director john rathbun told newschannel two today - quote: "not surprised by the cancellation of the nysphsaa championships considering the number of days we have left in this school year.

Section iii is still following all of the nys pause guidelines and look forward to the day we can get our students back in school."

((no cg)) rathbun and state athletic officials have maintained schools must be back in session before play could potentially begin.

Remember - per the governor's orders - all schools are closed until at least may 15th.
