Healthcare workers in New York cheered for Yanira Soriano on Wednesday afternoon, after she recovered from COVID-19 and met her newborn son Walter for the first time.

An urgent cesarian section had been performed on Soriano while she was in a medically-induced coma.

Soriano, 36, came into the hospital in her third trimester, very sick with COVID pneumonia, said Benjamin Schwartz, chairman of Northwell Health's Southside Hospital obstetrics and gynecology department.

Soriano had to go on a ventilator quickly and had an emergency caesarian section to deliver Walter while she was in a medically-induced coma, Schwartz said.

She was critically ill for two weeks in the intensive care unit.

Baby Walter was transferred immediately after birth to a children's hospital in New York City.

On Wednesday (April 15), Soriano got to see her son for the first time as dozens of hospital staff lined the hospital hallways and "clapped her out" as she was wheeled to the exit.

"The fact that this mom not only survived but was able to get out of her wheelchair and walk into her car and hold her baby gives us all incredible hope for future patients and our existing patients that have COVID disease," Schwartz said.
