Treating Coronavirus Patients While Living with Family

Each day that Dr. Valentyna Goloborodko returns from the hospital, she grapples with the possibility that she may get COVID-19 and infect her family.

[light music][siren blaring]- Basically my worstnightmare that I've hadfor the past two monthshas now manifested.Ambulances are coming every 30 minutesand the ERs are overwhelmed.Artificial ventilation is basicallythe main method of treatment right now.And we have finite number of ventilators. Before coronavirus, anybody who needed the ventalways got a vent. And now there are conversations, and I see hospitals alreadycoming up with protocolsof who is gonna getthe vent and who won't.Honestly, I don't even knowhow to live with that after that. This is very deeply, I guess disturbing.I went into this professionto be saving lives.[deep, mellow music]You know, before I would come home, and I would just forgetabout the hospitals, kind of be able to switch off.But now,I can't relax ever.I put shoes outside, Ispray them with Lysol.I strip off my work clothesright at the entrance. But even after that Idon't feel I'm safe, right?Because I may still have it,and I may still be givingit to my loved ones.[baby talking][Valentyna laughing]What are you telling him?Hmm?You have no idea aboutcoronavirus or any of that.Such happy times, no worries, carefree.Right, blondie?- Blontie.- Blondie!

[laughing][sirens chirping]Most of my colleagues already separatedfrom their families temporarily. But for me, it's impossibleto rent a second apartment right now.It does seem like a war.Because you're risking yourown health and your own life. This is the scariestdisease I've ever seen. But I will go to work no matter what.I do what I gotta do.I know people need me, andI get up and I go to work.
