YWCA prepares for more domestic violence cases to increase

First, as families are forced to stay in close quarters, they believe domestic violence cases will increase.
News 18 micah upshaw shares how they're coping.
Micah: for many families, this statewide 'stay at home' order could be seen as a positive to get some extra time together.
But for some families, that's not the case allison: even in the midst of a pandemic, abuse still happens, in fact, abuse happens even more in situations like this.
Micah: ywca greater lafayette is working to keep staff healthy while maintaining their mission of helping those in need.
Allison: our team here is committed to making sure that this shelter remains open and our clients in the community and those who need us are going to find help.
Micah: the shelter is currently at capacity -- but ywca has other housing options for those needing immediate services.
And staff members will be ready to help those in need through their 24-7 domestic violence hot line.
Beggs says it's important they e being a rock for people during these uncertain times.
Allison: i think we're all concerned and worried, i don't think we would be human if we weren't, but i believe or community is resilient, i know my staff is resilient.
Micah: sheriff bob goldsmith is expecting more domestic violence calls to come bob: we anticipate those numbers going up for the simple fact the simple fact that people are going to be in close quarters with each other and sometimes tensions rise.
Micah: sheriff goldsmith says officers are prepared and have a safety plan in place if they are called to deal with a domestic violence call.
Bob: we sure hope they don't go up, we hope that everybody's taking this time to reflect and just be thankful for the things that they have.
