Japan and U.S. evacuate citizens in Wuhan amid virus outbreak

WUHAN, CHINA — According to Bloomberg, China has confirmed over 5,900 cases of coronavirus nationwide and at least 132 deaths.

About 60 thousand patients are being monitored.

The number of confirmed cases now surpasses the number of SARS epidemic in China in 2003.

Channel News Asia reports, Japan successfully evacuated 206 of its citizens from Wuhan on Wednesday.

All passengers will be tested for the virus and will be asked to stay home until test results are ready.

According to CNN, the U.S. has also evacuated 240 American citizens from Wuhan on a flight chartered by the U.S. State Department.

There are roughly 1,000 Americans currently trapped in the city of Wuhan.

BBC News reports Chinese authorities in Beijing and Shanghai are implementing a 14-day monitoring period for individuals entering the cities from Hubei province, where Wuhan is located.

A report published in The Lancet by a group of Chinese researchers states that the earliest patient that contracted the virus had not visited Wuhan's seafood market.

The symptoms of the novel coronavirus include severe coughing, fever, and shortness of breath.

Complications from the virus can lead to pneumonia.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the best way to prevent spreading or catching the virus is to wear a facemask, cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing, washing your hands often for at least 20 seconds, avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, avoid sharing items that could be infected and consistently monitoring for coronavirus symptoms.
