Moment TWO Extinction Rebellion protesters are dragged off the roof of a London Tube by angry commuters

This is the moment TWO Extinction Rebellion protesters were dragged off the roof of a London Tube by angry commuters.

Video footage shows the eco-warriors climbing on top of the train at Canning Town station, east London, appearing to taunt rush-hour commuters with disruption to the service.

Commuters could be seen throwing food at one of the activists before a livid commuter launched himself at the protester, managing to grab the activist's leg and pull him to the ground - which was met with applause.

As one of the protesters kicked a commuter to stop him from climbing up the carriage, the man managed to grab the activist's leg and pull him to the ground - which was met with applause along the platform.

Seconds later, a frustrated commuter in a grey hoodie can be seen hoisting himself on top of the train, chasing the other pony-tailed protester towards the end carriage.

The protester is then forced to sit on top of the train cart before he is pushed down to the platform.

An eyewitness said: "It was like something out of a war zone.

"It was just terrible.

"I got my phone out as I had never seen anything like it.

People were just so angry.

"I don't think they'll win over any public sympathy with this sort of thing." Eight people have since been arrested on suspicion of obstructing the railway after similar demonstrations were carried out at Stratford and Shadwell.

Extinction Rebellion has since apologised for the "regrettable" scenes at Canning Town.

In a statement the activist group said: "It is regrettable that there was violence at today's action at Canning Town tube station.

We would like to express our sadness that events escalated this way."
