Trump floats moving migrants to 'sanctuary cities'

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he was considering sending illegal immigrants in the country to so-called sanctuary cities, as he castigated Democrats who have opposed his attempts to build a wall along the border with Mexico and other moves to discourage immigration.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said he was considering transporting asylum-seekers and immigrants who entered the country illegally to so-called sanctuary cities in America.

The idea appears meant to be political retaliation against Democrats in Congress.

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP SAYING: ‘California is certainly always saying, ‘Well, we want more people.’ And they want more people in their sanctuary cities, well, we’ll give them more people – we can give them a lot.

We can give them an unlimited supply, and let’s see if they’re so happy.’ The administration’s plan, first reported by The Washington Post, would bus undocumented immigrants to the largely Democratic cities that have opted to shield them from deportation.

San Francisco is one of them – home district of Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who had this to say about the plan Friday: (SOUNDBITE)(ENGLISH) HOUSE SPEAKER NANCY PELOSI SAYING: ‘I don’t know anything about it, but again, it’s just another notion that is unworthy of the presidency of the United States and disrespectful of the challenges we face as a country, as a people, to address who we are – a nation of immigrants.’ The Post reported that Department of Homeland Security officials balked at the idea.

A DHS spokesman told Reuters in a statement it was, ‘a suggestion that was floated and rejected, which ended any further discussion.’ Boston is another sanctuary city – it’s Mayor Marty Walsh on Friday appeared baffled by the proposal.

(SOUNDBITE)(ENGLISH) BOSTON MAYOR MARTY WALSH SAYING: ‘I don’t know if the President even knows what he’s talking about with that.

No idea what that means.

It’s counter-intuitive to what he says - he doesn’t want immigrants in the country and now he’s gonna drop people off in cities around America.

I don’t even know what that means.’ Separately, the Trump administration on Friday rushed to save its program of sending asylum seekers back to Mexico by filing an emergency motion with a U.S. Court of Appeals, asking it to block an injunction that is set to shut down the policy on Friday.
