ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION Cardinal George Pell's lawyer Robert Richter left the Victorian County Court on Wednesday (March 13) telling awaiting media that an appeal was "on foot" after his client was sentenced to six years in jail for sexually abusing two choir boys in Melbourne in the 1990s.

Richter added that he had no comment on how Cardinal Pell felt about the sentence.

Pell, who showed no emotion during the sentencing hearing that ran for more than one hour, has maintained his innocence and has filed an appeal that is scheduled to be heard in June.

Pell, a former top adviser to Pope Francis, is the most senior Catholic to be convicted for child sex offenses.
