Trump's Budget Proposes Cutting Farmer Subsidies

President Donald Trump released his 2020 budget on Monday, which includes a proposed 15 percent cut for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Reuters reports the budget called the USDA's subsidies to farmers โ€œoverly generous." Trump requested $20.8 billion for the USDA, which is a cut of $3.6 billion from the 2019 estimate.

Along with proposing reduced premium subsidies for crop insurance, it also proposes limiting the number of producers who would be eligible and limiting commodity payment limits.

The document reads, โ€œThe budget also proposes that USDA responsibly and efficiently use taxpayer resources by making targeted reforms to duplicative programs and overly generous subsidy programs."
