"They Taught Us to Blow You Up," Boys Kidnapped by Islamic State Say After Evacuation From Baghuz

The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) published a video on March 7 of a groups of Yazidi and Iraqi boys evacuated from Islamic State enclave in east Deir Ezzor.The SDF interviewed the boys who described their time in captivity with Islamic State.The first video shows Yazidi boys kidnapped by Islamic State in Sinjar, also known as Shingal.

The boy speaking in the video says that he had been in an Islamic State prison for five years.

“They used to teach us their religion and how to blow you up,” the boy says.The second video shows boys who were kidnapped by Islamic State from the Iraqi city of Tal Afar.The boy speaking at the 45-second mark in the video says that they were not given food for a month and that Islamic State militia used to beat them.

“They wanted to make us Cubs of the Caliphate to blow you up,” the boy says.The same group of boys were seen in a video shared by the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.Islamic State used boys as part of its propaganda narrative, calling them the “Cubs of the Caliphate.” The militia shared videos showing them training in camps and conducing executions.Islamic State kidnapped thousands of women and children during an assault on the region of Sinjar in 2014.

Women were often kept as slaves, the United Nations (UN) said.A UN report on June 2016, said that Islamic State had committed genocide against the Yazidi population and had "subjected every Yazidi woman, child or man that it has captured to the most horrific of atrocities.” Credit: SDF via Storyful
