Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Tuesday -- he will not be running for president-- putting an end to speculation that the billionaire was looking to challenge Donald Trump in 2020.

The 77-year old -who poured nearly $100 million into supporting Democrats in the midterms last year --broke the news in an op-ed on Bloomberg.com-- and came down hard on Trump and the Republican party.

He wrote "every day when I read the news, I grow more frustrated by the incompetence in the Oval Office.

I know we can do better as a country.

And I believe I would defeat Donald Trump in a general election." But he added "I am clear-eyed about the difficulty of winning the Democratic nomination in such a crowded field." ...a race where over 10 candidates have already thrown their hat in the ring- including senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker.

While Bloomberg shares the same view as most Democrats on issues like climate change and gun control--his background as a businessman with ties to Wall Street- might not have resonated with a Democratic party that appears to be moving to the left.

Bloomberg said instead he will focus his resources on supporting other candidates .
