North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended a welcome ceremony hosted by Vietnamese President Nguyen Phu Trong in Hanoi on Friday (March 1), a day after a second summit with U.S. President Donald Trump collapsed over sanctions.

The two sides gave conflicting accounts of what happened, raising questions about the future of their denuclearization negotiations.

Trump said two days of talks had made good progress in building relations and on the main issue of denuclearization, but it was important not to rush into a bad deal.

He said he had walked away because of unacceptable North Korean demands.

However, North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho told a news conference on Friday, hours after Trump left Hanoi that North Korea had sought only a partial lifting of sanctions "related to people's livelihoods and unrelated to military sanctions".

After the welcome ceremony, Kim and Trong will sit down for talks.

The North Korean leader's official itinerary also includes meeting with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and wreath laying at Monument to War Heroes and Martyrs and Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum on Saturday (March 2).
