Thousands Commemorate Slain Opposition Leader Boris Nemtsov in Moscow

Thousands of people marched in central Moscow and other Russian cities on February 24 to commemorate Boris Nemtsov, the opposition leader who was shot dead on a bridge near the Kremlin on February 27, 2015.Russian news agency Interfax cited officials as saying 6,000 people had attended the march in Moscow.

However, White Counter, a non-governmental organization that counts participants in rallies, estimated that more than 10,800 people attended – an increase on the 7,600 recorded by the NGO at the 2018 march.

Many carried anti-Putin placards and chanted against the president and the Kremlin, reports said.Five Chechnyans received jail sentences in 2017 for their involvement in the murder.The Moscow Times said Nemtsov, an ardent critic of President Vladimir Putin and co-chair of Russia’s People’s Freedom Party, was investigating Russia’s involvement in the conflict in Ukraine when he was killed.
