President Trump Nominates New FEMA Director

On Friday, President Trump  nominated Jeffrey Byard , a senior FEMA official, to lead the agency after former director Brock Long resigned earlier this week.

Byard is currently FEMA's associate administrator for the Office of Response and Recovery.

A White House statement about his nomination described his role as "the senior-most executive over disaster response, recovery, logistics, and field operations."  Byard would succeed Long, who resigned after a tenure plagued with ethics probes and inquiries about his management of the agency's response to a deadly hurricane in Puerto Rico.

Byard previously worked in a similar role for the state of Alabama, leading state operations efforts during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and other natural disasters.
