Republican leaders in the House moved to punish congressman Steve King on Monday (January 14), over recent remarks he made over white supremacy.

The lawmakers agreed to strip the Iowa Republican of seats on two committees after he questioned why 'white supremacy' was considered offensive last week in an interview with the New York Times.

It is not the party of Lincoln and definitely not America.

All people are created equal in America and we want to take a stance on that." Several Democrats in the House filed motions to censure King after the interview.

He has a history of making statements critics have condemned as racist.

In a statement after the interview, he said his comments were 'completely mischaracterized' and the committee's decision was a 'political decision that ignores the truth'.

Republican Senator and one-time presidential nominee Mitt Romney has called on King to resign.

" The GOP's Senate leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement, "if he doesn't understand why 'white supremacy' is offensive, he should find another line of work." The move to strip King of his posts must now be ratified by the full caucus of House of Representatives.
