This footballl season just isn't the same for one local football coach..

Illness has kept him off the field... wtva's andy lee shares his story..

Anyone who follows high school football in northeast mississippi knows mike mattox.

Mattox's booneville blue devils are off to a great start this season.

But a bout with pneumonia has limited mattox's ability to coach the team.

Andy: since 2010, mike mattox has been the head coach of the booneville high football team.

In his first eight seasons, mattox never missed a game.

But shortly before the start of the2018 season, something didn't feel right.

Mike mattox: 'during our ballgame with, our preseason jamboree, my back started hurting real bad during the ballgame.

I thought it was just back spasms, and come to find out, it wasn't, it was pneumonia caused by an abscess on my lung.'

Since the diagnosis, mattox has only been able to attend a handful of booneville practices, which he observes from his truck that'sperched high above the practice field.

He's lost 40 pounds, but says that's not necessarily a bad thing.

In week two, mattox felt well enough to coach the skunk bowl at baldwynfrom the press box.

Booneville won the game 48-0, but mattox acknowledges he pushed himself too hard that night.

Mattoxhasn't coached a game since then.

He says it's been a tough pill to swallow.

Mike mattox: " hardest part is not being around your feel like you're letting down the community, you're letting down your kids on the team, you're letting down your coaches, not pulling your weight, not doing you're supposed to be doing, even if you can't help it."

But, the show must go on.

Third year offensive coordinator kyle bond has been booneville's acting head coach in mike mattox's absence.

The blue devils improved to 5-0 after friday's win at tishomingo county.

Kyle bond: 'the team just kind of rallied around this unique situation.

They've played extremely hard and responded with maturity and i think they've done a fine job, and obviously it's translated to the field.'

Dallas gamble: 'coach mattox says one man doesn't stop this show.

He told us that this summer.

He says one man don't stop this show and first man he pointed at was himself.

That was really what stuck out to me when he got sick.'

Mike mattox: 'i couldn't ask for any better kids or coaches.

Not just the job they've done on the field, but the job they've done off the field.

Quality young men.

Quality men leading our program.

I couldn't be any prouder.'

The blue devils are off next week.

They return to action september 28th at kossuth.

Coach mattox tells us he's gonna take it one day at a time, and definitely not push himself too hard.

Ole miss began league play with a loss to alabama.

The crimson tide scored 62 unanswered after the rebels scored on the first play from scrimmage.

Ole miss defensive back montrell custis sustained a season-ending knee injury.

As wtva sports director jim holder explains, the rebels have to quickly put this one in the rear view mirror.

Jim holder, oxford: "after last year's 66-3 loss in tuscaloosa, ole miss was hoping for better results saturday night against alabama, but it was not to be.

Other than the first play of the game, it was not to be.

It was all alabama after that, as the tide rolls to that big 62-7 victory.

After the game, the rebels talked about not letting this loss carry over into the next game or the rest of the season."

Matt luke, ole miss head coach: "we had some chances early, we didn't capitalize on them, and it just snowballed from there, but a disappointing performance.

It's one game, it's one of our 12 opportunities, we can't this game beat us twice, we've gotta find a way to move forward."

Wesley mcgriff, ole miss defensive coordinator: "when you play a football team like alabama, you can't make mistakes, you can't make any miscues, because they're talented enough where they're gonna capitalize on it, and so, just give them credit."

Phil longo, ole miss offensive coordinator: "we just made too many mistakes, we got off to a good start, you know, it's fun, we get a touchdown, we're in the ball game, but we've gotta focus in, lock in, and perform that way the rest of the game, and we just too many early mistakes to overcome."

Jordan ta'amu, ole miss quarterback: "the best thing i can do is just learn from my mistakes, come out next week stronger than ever, and i just promise you guys that this won't ever happen again, on my side, the offense side, and just this team in general."

Jim holder, oxford: "next up for ole miss, they return to non-conference action, a home game next week against kent state.
