*JACKSONVILLE, FL / ACCESSWIRE / June 16, 2023 / *Florida law firm AndersonGlenn LLP is being featured in a new documentary being released by Netflix on June 19, Take Care of Maya. AndersonGlenn LLP represented the Kowlaksi family in the nationally covered case Kowalski v. Johns Hopkins.

The documentary, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, discusses the story of the Kowalski family. After seeking medical help for their 10-year-old daughter Maya's complex regional pain syndrome, Jack and Beata Kowalski were accused of child abuse via Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSP). Maya was taken into state custody and the ordeal led to Beata Kowalski committing suicide.

Afterward, the surviving family members - represented by Gregory A. Anderson, Jennifer C. Anderson, and Nicholas P. Whitney of AndersonGlenn LLP - alleged that the hospital's actions resulted in the removal of their daughter, Maya, from their custody during her medical treatment, which subsequently led to the mother's death. The case garnered significant national attention and shed light on the need for reforms and improvements in children's healthcare practices.

The documentary Take Care of Maya follows Maya Kowlaski, now 17 years old, who is pursuing a lawsuit against Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, with a trial date set for September 2023. The documentary features interviews with attorney Gregory Anderson, the founder and senior partner at AndersonGlenn LLP.

"It truly is a heart-wrenching story," Anderson says of the Kowalski case. "There are absolutely very real cases of Munchausen by Proxy which result in tragic child deaths. But this wasn't that. The Kowalskis would have done anything for their daughter, and when Maya was taken away, Beata simply could not live without her. She lost hope and lost her life."

Anderson, a Florida Bar Certified Mediator and Florida Supreme Court Qualified Arbitrator, who has been named in the Best Lawyers in America publication for over three decades, says that his law firm's involvement in the documentary involves personal interviews telling the behind-the-scenes story of the ongoing case.

Senior partner Gregory Anderson

"The family wants justice for the loss of their mother," Anderson says. "They know it won't bring her back. But we're fighting this battle so that no other family is ever torn apart by false accusations. We feel that the documentary will bring new attention to this case and spread awareness of ongoing issues regarding flaws within the child welfare system, as well as the devastating consequences faced by families embroiled in such situations."

Anderson and his team are prepared for the public eye to be drawn toward AndersonGlenn LLP. "We don't shy away from these cases, despite the challenges involved," Anderson states. "We hope that with the release of Take Care of Maya, public awareness will grow regarding the tragedy that has affected the Kowalski family, but also that there truly are law firms who care. We aren't here for the bottom line. These cases are personal for many of us who have families of our own."

Take Care of Maya premiers on Netflix on June 19, 2023.
