(MENAFN - Colombo Gazette) nvestigators have recovered content linked to extremism from laptops seized from two Sri Lankans deported from the United Arab Emirates. Police Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said one suspect had been deported on the 5th of December 2020 and was arrested by the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) from Mawanella. He said another 44-year-old man was arrested by the TID from Matale on 25th March 2021. DIG Ajith Rohana said the suspects were deported after they were found to be engaged in various activities linked to the promotion of extremism and terrorism. They have been accused of targeting selected Sri Lankan families to promote extremism and terrorism related content through social media. The Police Spokesman said the two men had sent various videos, speeches, photographs and other content related to extremism and terrorism via social media. He said the laptops of the two suspects had been analyzed by the TID during which a number of extremism and terrorism related content, including videos and photographs had been found. DIG Ajith Rohana said the TID is conducting further investigations in this regard. Eight suspects have been arrested on charges of promoting extremism and Wahabism in Sri Lanka in March 2021, alone. Meanwhile, seven suspects have been arrested in the country on charges of promoting the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), since November 2020.
