Covid sub-variant JN.1: INSACOG says 196 cases detected in country

India has detected 196 cases of the Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1, with Odisha being the latest state to report its presence. The JN.1 sub-variant has been found in 10 states and Union territories, including Kerala, Goa, and Gujarat. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has classified JN.1 as a separate "variant of interest" due to its rapidly-increasing spread. Previously classified as part of the BA.2.86 sub-lineages, JN.1 cases have been reported globally. The Centre has urged states to remain vigilant amidst the rise in Covid cases and the presence of JN.1.
