Survivors of the Bhopal gas disaster accuse the system of failing them in their quest for justice. One major reason for this is the inability of gas victims to vote as a united pressure group, regardless of their caste, religion, or political affiliations. The issue of gas victims became divided along religious lines, with the government and Union Carbide successfully dividing the city into Muslims and Hindus. Representatives elected from the majority gas-hit constituency of Bhopal (north) did not prioritize the concerns of gas victims, including contamination of groundwater and remediation of the Union Carbide site.
