The gram panchayat members believe this will help maintain harmony in their villages, as elopements have caused tension and social disruption. However, the RDPR minister has stated that such a law would violate fundamental rights and duties. Similar concerns have been expressed in Gujarat, where the government is considering passing a law requiring parental consent for love marriages.
