*NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / August 24, 2023 /* The University of Medicine and Health Sciences, (UMHS), a small, mission-driven medical school with a commitment to student support and a legacy of successful residency placements in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, recently hosted a free, walk-in health clinic on the island of St. Kitts. Organized by the student-run Med4You club, UMHS faculty and med students provided healthcare to 130 patients, with services including blood pressure recording, blood glucose monitoring, HbA1c and Lipid profiling, breast examinations, and checking vital signs and BMI.

Founded by UMHS student Ariana Hernandez, the mission of Med4You is to "learn and disseminate knowledge about the diversity of healthcare systems in the world, support disadvantaged communities and advocate for healthcare access as a human right." During last month's free clinic on St. Kitts, Med4You coordinated with UMHS faculty and other student-run clubs - including the dermatology club - to organize volunteers and provide compassionate care to local patients ranging in age from newborns to older adults.

"Our purpose at Med4You is to put into practice what we have learned by offering the St. Kitts community health services, thereby promoting health around the island," said Jairo J Camacho, Med4You president. "When the people of St. Kitts saw us providing healthcare with joy, enthusiasm, humility, and empathy, the word started spreading throughout the communities, and we were able to serve 130 patients. The experience I had that day is something I will never forget."

In addition to serving their neighboring community on the island of St. Kitts, UMHS students from Med4You have traveled around the world to administer critical health screenings and services. Recent medical missions include traveling to Costa Rica, providing care to underserved populations in Guatemala and the Dominican Republic, bringing healing and hope to Puerto Rico following the devastation of Hurricane Maria, and delivering vital health to the Yanesha people in the Amazon rainforest of Peru. The clinics serve the dual purpose of advancing healthcare in vulnerable communities, while also helping participating students to hone critical skills and develop cultural literacy. The response from patients has been overwhelmingly positive.

"Our local community health clinic was a very successful one, and we received many compliments about the services we provided," said Dr. Jagadeesh Nagappa, UMHS Associate Professor of Physiology. "Our students did a phenomenal job on that day serving the community with passion and love, and the patients were asking us when are we going to come back and do that again."
