West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis has canceled Breakfast Club and any similar events

Lafayette mayor john dennis has canceled breakfast club and any similar events.

I spoke with the mayor on the decision to shut down due to covid-19.

I also spoke with some purdue students who say it doesn't make sense to them.

Mia zebell "if we can go to the bars during the day, at night, whenever, canceling breakfast club, i don't get why that would help protect people more from covid."

Thomas steele "i think it's kind of sad, honestly.

There's just so much being taken away from everyone."

West lafayette mayor john dennis says it all started during the first home football game of the season.

October 24th also marked the first breakfast club of the year.

The event centers around students dressing up and visiting area bars in the early hours until game day kick-off.

Dennis "nobody wearing masks, people dressing up in costume, people definitely not keeping anything neasocial distancing."

Dennis says the behavior fueled his decision to cancel it, especially with holiday break coming up.

Dennis "we felt, for our last home game, that we need to take some very serious measures to make sure that when the students go home and go back to their families, they're not going to be bringing a surprise from tippecanoe county."

The original plan was to increase police presence and use queue lines to help prevent the spread.

Dennis says it's the kind of call you have to make during a public health crisis.

Dennis "the numbers are increasing exponentially, and they're getting to the point now where even with that measure, even by having some enforcement representatives there, it might not put us in a position to control a large crowd."

But that doesn't change the mind of some students.

Steele "there's people dying of so many other things.

Personally, my parents and my grandparents and my family would like to see activities go on."

Zebell "i do think we're missing out on a little bit of experience, but like i said i don't get why we can't go to the bars when we can go any other time."

A letter was sent from mayor dennis to any affected business.

Bars and restaurants will be allowed to operate during normal business hours.

However, you won't be allowed in if you're wearing a costume.
