City Council to Discuss Confederate Monument

City officials will meet to discuss the removal of a confederate statue outside the Marshall County Courthouse.

Has the night off.

Over the past several months -- there have been several protests held in albertville over the confederate statue.

Waay31's max cohan is live outside the marshall county courthouse with what we can expect from tonight's meeting, max?

Dan, we're not expecting the council to make any decisions during the meeting tonight.

The city clerk said earlier that there will be two speakers -- one in favor or moving the flag and monument and one who opposes it.

At this point - we don't know who the speakers are, or if they're affiliated with either group that's been part of demonstrations in front of the courthouse over the past few months.

The alabama memorial preservation act requires that local governments get permission from the state before moving historic structures if they have been around for more than 40 years.

If they don't - they can face a $25,000 fine.

The monument that stands outside the courthouse was erected in 1996 - meaning it could potentially be moved without a fine.

In september - sheriff's deputies had to respond to demonstrations related to the monument.

But as you can see - it's been quiet so far here.
