St. Joseph Habitat for Humanity, various organizations help in Southside recovery effort

The local Habitat for Humanity along with St.

Joe Serve and other organizations are helping to rebuild south side homes affected by flooding.

Injuries the local habitat for humanity is helping in the ongoing fight to rebuild much of the southside neighborhood after this summer's flood.

They along with many community organizations and even a state rep spoke with us today about their commitment to help the community not just today but for the weeks and months ahead.

<<ron johnson reporting to most of us, saturday is a day of rest, but not for southside flood relief volunteers today, we have a big group about 65 people with the baptist and st.

Joe serve volunteers out here.

The st.

Joseph habitat for humanity is teaming up with other local organizations donating their time to helping southside flood victims recover.

I'm glad they're doing it cause if it wasn't for them i wouldn't know what to do.

I needed help, i didn't have money to do anything to my house those who lost everything in the flood say the program is a godsend, one of many.

With salvageable homes now cleaned out from mold, the goal for habitat is to make them livable again.

Try to get some working bathrooms, kitchens in once the muck out is done and the floors are done.a local representative also taking part in the overall clean up effort.

Committing to long term recovery.

We have brought a lot of the not for profits together, a lot of churches together, i serve on this committee as well so we can have an organized way to address the problems and the issues that have down here in our flooded homes.the effort isn't moving ahead challenge free, as habitat staff say the pandemicamong other things has made it harder for them to receive larger appliances, we're actually kind of competing with other disasters around the country.not to mention many of the flooded homes are now without working furnaces, something habitat staff are trying to do something about before cold weather sets in.

We probably need about 120 furnaces in the area, all of the furnaces got mud and water in to them when the flood happened.

Despite these challenges everyone in the south end is happy that so many are involved in recovery effortsit's people from all over the nation that have come to really support the southend and the resiliency of our south end and the resilience of our southenders.>> habitat for humanity plans to another one of these clean up events two weeks from now on october 3rd., and they are looking for volunteers you can contact the habitat's office for more information
