Individuals In Quarantine After Positive Case

Less than a week after students in some Huntsville City Schools returned to campus dozens of people associated with the district are in quarantine.

This comes after a positive case was confirmed at the academyy for academics and arts elementary school in north huntsville.

People with symptoms were put in quarantine at blossomwood elementary school, goldsmith shiffman elementary school and williams elementary in west huntsville.

Waay 31's sydney martin worked to learn more about the cases and adjustments the district is taking..

Craig williams, huntsville city school spokesperson "we have about 80 in quarantine in across our district of about 23,500 students give or take a little bit students and so those students are at home away from others.

Thursday afternoon, huntsville city school spokesperson craig williams told me the district notified families of possible exposures to people with coronavirus or displaying symtpoms during the first four days back to school.

And he said the district's relying on teachers to identify students in classrooms who might not be well.

Craig williams, huntsville city school spokesperson "we have provided guidance to our teachers on how to identify and look for those symptoms of coronavirus, covid-19.

So in the event a teacher identifies a student may be exhibiting some of those symptoms they are sent to the school nurse and there the school nurse makes sure the student is away from others in the safe rooms. we have one of those set up on each school campus."

Privacy concerns are stopping the district from confirming if the coronavirus case at the academy for academics and arts is a staff member or student.

It also won't give any additional information about the 3 possible cases under investigation.

Williams told me the district only planned to have plexiglass barriers for elementary school students- but as of thursday- it's in the process of ordering it for students inside every school.

Craig williams, huntsville city school spokesperson "you see the student desks spaced out in the classroom, for elementary grades, some of those have that plexiglass partition, so yeah that's what we are in process of getting for all grades."
