Students in Monroe County, Amory returned to school Monday

Some students in Monroe County went back to school Monday; others will have to wait until Tuesday.

Others will have to wait until tomorrow wtva's chelsea brown spoke with amory high school's principal about what administrators are doing to ensure a safe return.

Here in amory, students with the last names a-l came back to campus today.

I spoke with one mom about sending her kids back to school in the middle of a pandemic.

"i was very nervous about sending them back."

Stephanie capel is the mother of gracie and dakota.

Both students started at new schools.

This year gracie started 6th grade at amory middle school and dakota started 9th grade at the high school this year.

Capel reminded her kids to wear their masks and using hand sanitizer.

"you know they are wearing their masks and they have germ-x hooked to their backpack and i talk to them constantly about wearing germ-x.

So i think they will be fine."

Leigh stanford is the amory high school principal.

Amory school district is not allowing any vistitors into the buildings, all students and staff must wear masks.

Only studetns with last names a-l returned today.

"everyone has been in great spirits, they are kinda glad to be back and seeing each other."

Stanford says a majority of the high school students returned for in-person classes this year.

"about 50 of our almost 500 kids are going virtual, but the rest of our students are here."

As students arrived this morning staff checked their temperatures.

"they were making sure everyone was okay before they let them go in."

Capel has heard a few concerns about kids wearing masks on the buses.

"what i have heard other parents say is about kids wearing a mask on the bus with it being so hot right now."

Capel says dakota and gracie are fine with wearing a mask while at school.

"gracie has got her's to match her outfit today and dakota is happy with his mississippi state one."

Amory school district is doing a soft start this week.

Students will go 2 days this week.

Next week students will go to school everyday but wednesday.

That's when they will all do virtual learning.
