An earthquake measuring 5.1 hit just outside Sparta, North Carolina shortly after eight Sunday morning and was felt in eastern Kentucky and beyond, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

For some people in eastern kentucky, sunday got off to a shaky start.

Some of you felt an earthquake just to the east outside sparta, north carolina, near the virginia border.

The u-s geological survey reports it measured 5-point-1.

The north carolina geological survey says that makes it the strongest quake to hit that state in 96-years.

It hit at 8-07 this morning.

The u-s geological survey reports it was felt as far north as washington, d-c and as far south as atlanta.

There was some structural damage in north carolina...but no injuries reported.
